cs-Hello Colton, how do you like talking about movies this early in the morning?
cf-Anytime is a good time. I'm at the Starbucks near my home so why not do an interview?
cs-I really like your site.
cf-We just launched 3 weeks ago. I have more snippets of my songs to be posted soon ...some recent and some of the older stuff to give people a broader idea of what I do and have done. Looks pretty good huh?
cs-definitely....how old were you when you began singing?
cf-All of my life I have been singing.I have always been musical and performing in some way shape or form so it's just something that is part of who I am..I love music and the creative process of making it..I can't say the same for the business.
cs-Ugh ,I know . It is quite discouraging to see the way "talent" is considered.
cf-It what all artists today have to deal with in order to get their shit out there...and it sad to say but the least talented are sometimes the most rewarded.
cs-Ya. Speaking of legitimacy, do you write you own music and lyrics?
cf-Yes I do and I wrote or co-wrote all of the tracks that will be on my site.
cs-fantastic.
cf-I signed to Denise Rich in the 90's who is of course a big songwriter and she and I wrote a few tracks and that is when I got paired up with Frankie Knuckles.
cs-Cool..so you are currently writing then?
cf-Actually I just wrote my next single with MACQUAYLE to follow my duet with PEPPER MASHAY Signed,Sealed,Delivered ...
cs-I have to say that covering Stevie Wonder is bold, but you two really made the song your own and that is no small feat.
cf-Yeah thanks, he is one of my influences and I really dig what he does....we had a blast. If you have anything to offer as a singer, you can't go wrong with Stevie's songs...It was a pleasure to record with PEPPER and of course performing it all over has been great. I love the mixes too...MACQUAYLE and Ralphi did an excellent job and hearing house music, especially with vocals in them, in clubs and at parties is my favorite...and that song is a happy song.. so it makes me feel good.
cs-who are your other musical influences?
cf-I grew up listening to Chaka Khan, Al Green , Marvin Gaye, and more recently Babyface ,Tony Terry..that's how I learned to riff and sing like I do..singing to them and later with them..It is a wonderful thing to have those sort of musical influences in my life.
cs-It is clear that music is your passion..so what with the documentary?
cf-I have learned that you have to let go and go with things... to have no expectations as the business tends to be so fucked up..it's like playing the lottery...I am looking forward to parlaying my music and my happiness into whatever form it comes out..right now this documentary is where I'm at..If 20 years ago this opportunity came along I don't know that I would have been ready to see my self in this world and be satisfied with what I saw..I am at a place in my life now where I am happy ...I have a full life and hopefully it will continue to grow , but I am very much enjoying the moment right now.
cs-How do you think your porn fan base will react to the transition?
cf-There may be a portion of my audience that will not want to see me in a different light..but most will be okay...
cs-How do you feel about that?
cf- To me it is titillating to think that there may some skepticism in "this porn dude trying to be a singer" but I hope when they see me in Naked Fame, they will see that music is what I really can do..though I have to say that porn afforded me an audience that I may not have been exposed to otherwise since the music industry is so narrow about who they let through.
cs-It seems that in the film they will see the opposite is true, that you were a singer who happened to become a "porn dude" right?
cf-Yes that's right..I have been singing for over 20 years yet I only did porn for 10 months..though the impact of the porn industry is more much more vast..of course with a major segment of society having a moral objection ..
cs- You do not have these moral issues then?
cf- No ,I don't have that issue..and my goal is to appeal to those who are my audience..I am not concerned with an audience that have homophobic views or moralistic issues with my having done porn.
cs-Well put..I think alot of times people are so afraid to do their art because of the fear of their audience's interest or disdain for their work...I appreciate that you are not playing to that mindset.
cf-It enables me to be who I am. It was a struggle coming up (sexuality) in my early work in the music industry where they did not even want me to sing the way I did and be white...it is so cookie-cutter...they did not want me to talk about the fact that I was gay, now it is non-negotiable.
cs- In the movie Naked Fame, you are being followed by cameras, how was that different from your other film experiences ?
